The Longhorns scored all three matchups, combining a 26-3 score, including an 8-0 result in five innings in the final meeting. Overall, two of the previous three games ended in five innings, February 25, 2016 (15-1) and February 25, 2023 (8-0). The two programs only play softball games in Austin, Texas. Alabama A&M Sunday’s game between Alabama A&M and Texas marks the first game between the two softball programs. The contest between the Aggies and Longhorns on Saturday, New Mexico marks the first time the two played softball games with each other in Las Cruces, Texas or Austin. The previous two meetings took place in Phoenix, Arizona (February 9, 2001) and Fullerton, California (March 14, 2001). Texas won the final matchup 3-0, while New Mexico won the first ever meeting. The USF Bulls and Longhorns took the diamonds on the field at Red & Charline McCombs, and it is the first time Texas has played USF in Austin since February 20, 2000. UT holds the all-time 6-1 record against USF in the Bulls’ lonely victory on March 17, 2023. In all six Texas wins, Longhorn Pitching limits USF attacks to two or more runs they earned in each game.
I’ll lead
By maintaining the No. 1 ranking in the top 25 national FastPitch Coaches Association (NFCA), Texas is currently ranked as the top team in the polls in its fourth consecutive ranking (February 11, Feb. 18, Feb. 18, Feb. 18, Feb. 18, Feb. 18, Feb. 18, Feb. 18, Feb. 18, Feb. 18). If Texas wins all five games over the weekend, the Longhorns open a new season with 20 of their first 21 games, will be marked for the first time under seventh-year head coach Mike White. 2012 was UT’s last victory to begin the season in 20 of its first 21 games. The 2012 team opened the season with victory in 22 of their first 23 games. The 2006 team held the program’s record by winning 26 of their first 27 games. On the next run, Mia Scott will join Janae Jefferson (222) and Taylor Hoagland (221) as the only student-athletes in the program history to score more than 200 runs throughout her 40 acre career. On her next home run, Reese Atwood will join Taylor Hoagland (58), Lindsey Stevens (47) and Mary Iacopo (42) as the only student-athletes to hit over 40 career home runs as longhorns. Mia Scott will move to the top three of the program’s career hit leaderboards with three base hits over the weekend. Scott is shy about tying Lexi Bennett (2009-12) to third place over the weekend, tied Breger Washington (2011-14) to second place to narrow down 11 hits.
