No. 1 Texas Softball concluded its first day with the Hillen Brand Invitational in Tucson, Arizona.
Whose game was the Longhorns starting their day with 20th-placed Stanford, and up until the end of the five innings? They tied 4-4 at the bottom of the sixth inning, and Cardinal took over. Stanford scored five runs on four hits and one Texas error in the innings, increasing the score to 9-4. Texas continued to run at the seventh bottom, but that wasn’t enough, and the Cardinal handed the Longhorns the first loss of the season.
The Texas player did not get more than one run in the game. Right fielder Ashton Maloney and center fielder Kayden Henry scored in the first innings. Seventh.
The day wasn’t finished for Texas, and the Longhorns took over unranked Colorado state later in the day by becoming the biggest victory of the season. Despite only one strikeout, pitcher McMorgan held the Rams to two runs, with her Horns going up 18 in five inning games.
If the previous game was a player’s single run, this was counted on multiple. Designated batsman Reese Atwood led the team with three runs and five RBIs, with two successive successives each being Maloney, Henry, catcher Katie Stewart, shortstop Rayan Goode and Simsch. Pinch hitter Rachel Wells, left fielder Vanessa Cuiloga and second baseman Sirien Blister each closed the scoring board with one.
The nine runs in four innings sealed Texas’ contract, already at the run-ahead rule margin.
Texas will face UC Davis and No. 11 Arizona tomorrow on the second day of the tournament.
