No. 1 Texas Longhorns Softball is away for another weekend series as it appears in Starkville’s No. 18 Mississippi.
The Longhorns have yet to drop the Conference Series this season and have so far lost only one game against Florida in their first weekend. Texas is about to defeat a different ranked opponent, returning to the unanimous No. 1 ranking across four major votes.
Texas has never lost the match to the Bulldogs, the last of six meetups in Austin in late February 2021. The two have never played at Nusz Park, where this weekend’s game will be held.
Sophomore infielder Katie Stewart made the program’s history by becoming the first longhorn to multiple seasons with over 55 RBI. Stewart will be joined by junior catcher Reese Atwood this weekend. Last year, Atwood set up a program record of 90 with the single-season RBI.
Stewart can continue to add her name to the book with the next hit. Not only will she reach the 100 hit mark, she will also become the second most active sophomore in the program and can do so alongside outfielder Kaden Henry. The current Longhorns have six feats, Henry of 116, Miascot of 268 senior utility Miascot, 170 atwood, 168 redshirt junior Ashton Marony of 168 junior utility Lay Angood, senior first bass man Katithyms and new member of the club.
Henry just came out of a four-hit performance against Stephen F. Austin in a mid-week matchup, and is just three stolen bass from tying Scott’s 53, currently number 10 in program history. Scott can make his name by winning five runs this weekend. If she can, she will break Janae Jefferson’s career run of 222 points.
To close the first month of conference play, the Texas sweep could mark the March of the first one or more losses of the program in 13 years.
The Longhorns’ first pitch against the Bulldogs will take place on Friday, March 28th at 6pm, with all three matchups airing on SEC Network+.
