The Longhorns hold a 4-0 record against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, with all four games played in Austin. The last time the two teams met was in an exhibition match last spring. Texas has a rich history with two potential second-round opponents. The Longhorns hold a 6-4 record against the USC Trojans, and head coach Gerrit Elliott served as the Trojans’ interim head coach from 1999-2000 before coming to Texas. Ta. Texas is 28-20 all-time against UT Arlington, but the teams haven’t met since 2003.
NCAA tournament talk
Texas will begin its quest for a third consecutive national championship after winning the 2022 and 2023 titles. The University of Texas is making its 41st appearance in the NCAA Tournament and has an overall record of 116-36 in the NCAA Tournament. The Longhorns are 36-0 in first round play and have advanced to the NCAA regional semifinals 35 times, the NCAA regional finals 28 times and the NCAA semifinals 15 times. The Longhorns have won a total of five national championships in program history. UT won the AIAW National Championship in 1981 and also won the NCAA Championship in 1988, 2012, 2022 and 2023.

Madisen Skinner and Marianna Singletary were named to the All-SEC First Team, leading a group of four Longhorns who earned All-SEC team honors in their first year in the league. In addition to Skinner and Singletary, Regan Rutherford was named to the All-SEC Second Team and Aiden Ames was named to the All-Freshman Team.

The Longhorns faced a tough road during the regular season, playing a total of 16 games against teams that advanced to the NCAA Tournament, including nine SEC programs. The SEC joins the ACC and Big Ten in leading all conferences in selecting nine teams to play in the postseason tournament.

Texas has been a model of consistency for more than a decade, being the only Division I volleyball program to rank in the top 10 in each of the past 18 seasons. The Longhorns have also finished in the top five in the past 15 seasons. 18 seasons including 11 consecutive years from 2008 to 2018. Texas also has the nation’s longest streak of appearances, with 18 consecutive NCAA regional semifinal (“Sweet 16”) appearances. Of the past 18 regional semifinal appearances, the Longhorns have advanced to 17 NCAA regional finals, 11 national semifinals and seven national championship matches.

Texas played very well for long stretches of the season, winning nine straight games, including the first seven SEC games. During that streak, Texas hit .300 and averaged 14.13 kills per set, 13.07 assists and 2.82 blocks per set. After that, things got tough for the Longhorns, losing three straight in five sets. After that tough stretch, Texas won the final six games of the regular season, hitting .350.

Texas volleyball embarked on a new era in the SEC, falling just short of winning the conference title in the program’s first season. The Longhorns have a long history of conference dominance, winning 29 championships in league history, including 16 Big 12 titles and 13 Southwest Conference championships. The Longhorns’ 2023 league championship marks a record seventh straight year in the Big 12 Championship, winning or sharing 12 of the past 13 league championships and 15 of the past 17 league championships. The Longhorns extended their streak of sold out games to 40 consecutive games starting in the 2022 season. Texas ranked fifth in the nation last season with an average attendance of 4,495 for its 16 home games. The Longhorns played all 16 home games to sold out houses in 2023 and finished the 2022 season with 12 consecutive sold out games at Gregory Gym. For the 2022 NCAA Regional Final against Ohio State, Texas drew an audience of 5,344, setting a Gregory Gym attendance record.
Singletary’s dominant stretch
Middle blocker Marianna Singletary put together a dominant performance in October and was named SEC Defensive Player of the Week for the third consecutive week. Singletary was also named the league’s Player of the Week in two of those three weeks. This season, she has 128 total blocks and ranks 12th in the nation with 1.47 blocks per set. She also had 162 kills and a batting average of .356 on the season.

Madisen Skinner established himself as one of the best players in the country last season and is one of the top returning players in 2024. With more than 1,800 career kills, Skinner ranks 13th among active Division I players in career kills. He is a three-time U.S. champion. Skinner, the 2023 VolleyballMag.com Player of the Year, will play her final season as a college volleyball player in 2024. Last season, Skinner was ranked No. 6. Nationally, they ranked 7th with 4.80 kills per set and 7th with 547 total kills. Her 547 kills rank third all-time by a Longhorn and the most since Mila Topic (593) in 2004. Skinner further stepped up her game in the postseason, averaging 5.43 kills per set and a .316 batting average, and was selected to the NCAAs. Best player in the final four.
Ranking
Texas, ranked No. 1 in the SEC Coaches Poll, is one of four teams in the SEC’s top 25, with Kentucky ranked 12th, Florida State 18th and Missouri ranked 24th. It has become. In non-conference play, Texas played four nationally ranked teams: Wisconsin, Minnesota, Stanford, and Baylor. Texas began the 2024 season as the No. 1 team in the AVCA Preseason Coaches Poll for the fifth time (2013, 2017, 2021, 2023, 2024). Following the graduation of All-American Asjia O’Neal, two young players are poised to carry on the legacy of Texas’ great middle blocker. Aiden Ames will be the Longhorns’ first true freshman middle blocker to start since Chiaka Ogbogu in 2013. Redshirt sophomore Marianna Singletary has made strides this season and has been named SEC Defensive Player of the Week three times. The Longhorns ranked third in the nation with 2.89 blocks per set last season, and had double-digit blocks in 21 of 32 games last season.
