Austin, Texas – Texas women’s tennis took 33 Alabama 4-0 Friday at Weller Indoor Tennis Center. The Longhorns moved to 6-6 in SEC play with victory.
In the match, which was moved indoors due to weather concerns, only five players were available to the Crimson Tide, and was confiscated into No. 3 doubles and No. 6 single. The Longhorns scored that point with a confiscation of doubles and a 6-3 win in first place, and a confiscation of No. 6 single gave them a quick 2-0 lead. Texas then won almost simultaneously with freshman No. 80 Ariana Anazagasty-Pursoo being No. 4 and Vivian Ovrootsky in fifth place for Clinch.
In the singles, Anazagasty-Pursoo extended his overall lead to 3-0 with a 6-2 win over Margaux Maquet, 6-2. Anazagasty-Pursoo moved to a 5-1 lead in the first set, with Maquet winning 2-1 in the third game. She later held 5-2 again, but Anazagusti Prue offered the set in the next game. In the second set, both players started with Deuce-Point Break and Anazagasty-Pursoo. It was all Anazagati Palsau when she ran 5-0 for the victory after Maquet took a 2-1 lead.
Just as Anazagasty-Pursoo cleaned up the backhand winner for the match, Ovrootsky was in the middle of match points, winning Priya Nelson 6-2, 6-3. In the first set, Ovrootsky was pushed out for a 3-0 lead and Nelson scored Deuce points 3-1, before the next three games served until Ovrootsky broke on the set of 6-2. The second followed roughly the same score in the first seven games, with no deuce points, and Nelson was held 5-3 in his eighth game. Ovrootsky then offered a clinch match.
This left three unfinished matches on the top three single line, with the Longhorns holding all the leads. Freshman No. 33 Carmen Herea led the match in the first set, No. 64 Petra Sedlackova, 6-2, 2-4. After Helea held the opening serve for the second set, Cedrakkaba made a 4-0 run 3-1 with a deuce point hold. Helea got one breakback for a 4-2 deficit in that frame before play stopped.
Freshman No. 91 Ashton Bauers is Maria Martinez Baquero, 6-1, 4-4, No. It was ahead of 2. The Bowers secured two breaks in the first set with a 2-0 and 5-1 lead before winning 6-1. Second, Vaquero broke holding at 2-0, but Bowers broke and held it. The final four games then appeared in the serve despite reaching two games of that stretch.
In the final match, freshman No. 76 Esther Meri led Sarah Nayar 6-3 and 6-0 on the third batter. Nayar responded with a 3-0 run, but Meri secured consecutive Deuce points and started a 6-0 run to get the set, establishing a 3-0 lead in the second, and the play was stopped.
Early in the doubles, after being confiscated in third place, the No. 26 duo of Anazagasti Palsau and Bauers scored points in first place with a 6-3 win over Cedrakkaba and Baquero. All the first three games were deuce with the Crimson Tide breaking in the opening game, but the Longhorns took a 2-1 lead. Two games later, the Longhorns again took a 3-2 lead in deuce. The final two games then served for UT victory.
The match in No. 2 remained unfinished 5-4 with freshmen Charlotte Kempenayas Potts and Salma Dragdova’s leading Make and Nayar. Just like in the No. 1 game, Alabama started the game with deuce points, with Texas scoring deuce points with a 2-1 lead. The Longhorns broke 3-1 again, but the Crimson Tide broke and started a 3-0 run with a 4-3 lead. Texas then insisted on the last two games for a break and hold to regain a 5-4 lead before play stopped.
The Longhorns (12-9, 6-6 seconds) will then return to the road and move to Starkville, Michigan, facing Mississippi at 11am on Sunday, April 6th.
