ARLINGTON, Texas — The 19th-ranked University of Texas baseball team dropped the season opener 4-3 innings at Globe Lifefield on Friday evening.
After the third freshman baseman Adrian Rodriguez put the Longhorns (0-1) first in the 10th inning with a solo homer, the Cardinals (1-0) answered with two runs in the bottom half. I answered to separate the first day of the Shriners Children’s College showdown.
Louisville left fielder Zion Rose and concluded the contest with an RBI single before center fielder Lucas Moore delivered a walk-off-based hit.
The Cardinals scored all four runs in the final two frames as Texas was one step away from securing a victory in the first contest under manager Jim Schlossnaggle.
Louisville tied up the rally. The Cardinals scored a tied tally and set the stage for outfielder Garrett Pike.
Pike beat Louisville’s scoreless drought, winning a right RBI single from two RBI singles, igniting a first-bass dugout.
Texas flew early to the board as outfielder Will Gasparino crushed a two-run opposing explosion of the opposite field in Louisville’s second off.
For the Longhorns, senior left-handed pitcher Jared Spencer shut down the Cardinals with his fiery Orange debut.
Spencer pitched a scoreless inning of 5.2, with six batters not zero. He went out following a hit on the pitch, and the Indiana transfer retired 11 of the next 13 batters, limiting Louisville to four hits midway through.
Cardinals Junior Tucker Biven (1-0) recorded a victory in relief, while seventh-year redshirted Wilmercer (0-1) was tagged with loss.
The Longhorns will start bouncing on Saturday as the Texas plays Ole Miss. The first pitch will be set at Globe Life Field at 7pm.
