Georgia Amoor scored 14 points, but on Thursday night the eighth-placed Kentucky women’s basketball team lost to No. 3 Texas 67-49.
Kentucky (19-4, 8-3 Southeastern Conference) got a double double from Teeni Key, who had 12 points and 10 rebounds. Dazia Lawrence scored 11 points for the cat.
Texas (25-2, 11-1) scored the first three points of the game, with the keep-putback earning the cat on the board, earning it early 3-2. After the Longhorns scored, Lawrence hit a 3 to tie the game 5-5. Texas scored the next four points to lead 9-5.
Amoore Basket reduced the deficit to 2, with a tough layup from the key tied the game 9-9. Texas scored, but Amoore’s pair of free throws tied together 11-11. Texas scored again, leading 13-11 before Amoore’s free throw cut to 13-12. After the Longhorns scored again, Amoore connected to get the UK within 15-14. Texas added a free throw and the Longhorns led 16-14 a quarter later.
Amoore began scoring in the second quarter, tied the game with 16. Lane’s key basket gave Kentucky their first lead, 18-16. The Longhorns made free throws, but two keys, with the UK leading 20-17. Texas regained the lead by grabbing the next four, but Sania Tyler hit a pair of charity throws and Britain came back ahead 22-21.
Texas scored the next six points before Lawrence Runner cut the deficit to 27-24. The Longhorns scored the next four, with Tyler’s free throw 31-25. The Texas scored just before the buzzer, and the Longhorns took a 33-25 lead. Amoor led the cat with nine points in the first half.
In the third quarter, Key scored the first two points, but Texas answered quickly, scoring six straight in a row to lead 39-27. Lawrence cut the deficit to 39-30. However, the Longhorns scored 12 straight to lead 51-30. Texas outscored Kentucky 24-10 in the third quarter, with the Longhorns leading 57-35 in a 10-minute lead.
Kentucky scored the first 10 points of the final stanza with a layup by Amelia Hassett and Key. Three from Lexi Blue, layups and free throws from Amore went 57-45. But that would be as close as a cat would get. The Texas scored the next eight points to lead 65-45, allowing the Longhorns to leave the game from there.
The cat will return to action on Sunday and host Georgia within the historic Memorial Coliseum. The chipoff is set at 2pm and the game can be viewed on SEC Network Plus.
