NORTH TEXAS — North Texans who worked with Jimmy Carter when he served as the 39th president remember him as a decent guy.
Former North Texas Congressman Martin Frost told Eye on Politics reporter Jack Fink, “I thought Carter was the right time, and I’ve been proven right.” spoke.
Mr. Frost said President Carter will be forever remembered, among other things, for bringing peace between Egypt and Israel.
Mr. Carter is the last Democratic candidate to win in Texas in the general election.
Frost said he took Carter to the Fort Worth Convention Center just before Election Day.
“I think by coming to Fort Worth at noon on Sunday and having 10,000 enthusiastic people, they made a huge difference in leading the state of Texas,” Frost said.
Two years before the North Texas Democratic Party was elected to Congress, Frost supported Georgia Governor Jimmy Carter for president over Texas Senator Lloyd Bentsen for the 1976 Democratic nomination.
“I was impressed with Jimmy Carter,” Frost said. “He was a breath of fresh air. He certainly seemed very candid and honest as I got to know him. I volunteered on his campaign. He eventually became a Carter delegate to the Democratic National Convention.
Frost later became North Texas coordinator for the Carter-Mondale movement, covering 25% of the state.
