WACO, Texas (KWTX) – Where did you go in 2024?
As we ring in the new year, it only makes sense to take a look back at the top five Central Texas sports moments from the past year.
Cheers to a great year of sports here in Central Texas!
5. Crawford Girls VB wins 2A state championship.
In a rematch of the 2023 2A state championship game, the Crawford Lady Pirates got the best of Iola this year, defeating them 3-2 and winning the third state title in program history.
4. La Vega football qualifies for 4A state title game.
For the first time since 2019, the Pirates had the opportunity to play at Jerry World. Although they didn’t come home with the hardware, their run was even more magical, winning 10 straight games after starting the season 2-3.
3. Baylor wins the Bluebonnet Battle against TCU and is the game winner.
It’s not every day that a Baylor fan storms the field, but there’s a reason they do. Isaiah Hankins’ 33-yard field goal won the game, giving Baylor its first win over its rival since 2019. After the win, Baylor moved one win away from bowl eligibility.
2. La Vega GBB wins consecutive championships
If you know anything about high school basketball, you know La Vega. Led by head coach Marcus Willis Sr., the Lady Pirates are on track to win their second straight 4A state championship in 2024 and a three-peat in 2025.
1. Opening of Foster Pavilion
In 2024, it took just two days for Central Texas to experience its most memorable sports moment in a long time. The long-awaited opening of the $212.6 million Foster Pavilion brings even more life to Baylor basketball, the university, and the city of Waco.
