The Red River rivalry between Oklahoma and Texas is one of the best games in college football. In the 2024 matchup, No. 1 Texas State defeated No. 18 Oklahoma State, winning 34-3. When Texas and Oklahoma State met for the first time as SEC members, the Longhorns scored 34 unanswered points, totaled 406 yards and forced two fumbles in the win.
The 31-point loss was Oklahoma’s largest since 2022, when they were shut out 49-0 by Texas.

Oklahoma vs. Texas: Series History
Texas holds the all-time lead in the series with 64 wins, 51 losses, and 5 draws. But OU hasn’t hit over .500 since World War II and is 17-8 since 2000. The teams met twice in the 2018 season, and the second time in the competition for the Big 12 title, the University of Oklahoma won 39-27.
Below are some famous games.
1958
Oklahoma had won six straight against the Longhorns, and had won nine of the previous 10, dating back to 1958. In second year under Texas head coach Darrell Royal, the former Oklahoma QB ended a losing streak with a 15-14 upset of the second-place Sooners. .
1963
For the first time in the series, Oklahoma State and Texas State met in a No. 1 vs. No. 2 matchup. Texas won 28-7 and remained undefeated for the rest of the season, finishing with a consensus national championship and a win over Heisman winner Roger Staubach and No. 2 Navy in the Cotton Bowl.
1976
Texas coach Darrell Royal accused OU and coach Barry Switzer of spying on practices. ESPN reported that Royal had Switzer, assistant coach Larry Lacewell, and a spy suspect (Ronnie Williams) take a lie detector test, and if they passed, each would receive a gift to a charity of their choice. They asked each person to donate $10,000.
In the end, it was discovered that Oklahoma had been spying on him four years earlier (when Chuck Fairbanks was head coach).
Before the 1976 game, President Gerald Ford was on both the Royal and Swiss teams. There wasn’t much conversation. In the end, Royal’s final game against Red River ended in a 6-6 tie.

1984
UT was in first place. Osaka University was in 3rd place.
Switzer, the University of Oklahoma coach, wore the “Beat Texas” cap, and long-time Texas coach Mack Brown eventually became the Sooners’ offensive coordinator. OU led 15-12 late in the game and looked like it might pull off a game-clinching interception in the end zone, but it was ruled incomplete. The Longhorns then kicked a field goal to tie the score at 15-15.
I didn’t know I was wearing a “Beat Texas” hat. Gave it to me in a downpour. I think I’ll wear it today! I hope Bob does the same! #CoachScavana pic.twitter.com/QpLIweB9qe

2000
OU’s surprising march to the national championship included a shocking 63-14 victory over the Longhorns. Sooners running back Quentin Griffin tied the NCAA record with six rushing touchdowns.
Oklahoma gained 534 total yards and Texas gained 154 yards. This marks the beginning of a five-game winning streak in the series. It took Vince Young a 45-12 victory over the Sooners en route to the national title in 2005.
2021
One season after OU defeated Texas in a 4OT game, there was more drama for the rivals. Texas led by 21 points before the sixth-ranked Sooners scored 25 points in the final quarter to win 55-48 and stay undefeated. Caleb Williams, who replaced Spencer Rattler at quarterback, had 212 passing yards, and Kennedy Brooks rushed for 217 yards and two scores, including a 33-yard touchdown with seconds left.
