EDINBURG, Texas – As part of an ongoing effort to attract a wide range of businesses to the area, the Edinburg Economic Development Corporation (EEDC) is pleased to announce that popular bakery-cafe restaurant Panera Bread will open its first Rio Grande Valley location in Edinburg.
The city’s Panera Bread, at 201 E. Trenton Road, is one of two new to the area: San Antonio-based development and investment firm Merit Commercial Real Estate plans to open the 3,800-square-foot restaurant in November 2024.

“Our goal has always been to foster healthy economic growth in Edinburg,” said EEDC Board Chair Veronica Gonzalez. “Panera Bread is a great example of a national company taking notice of our city and considering its economic impact when choosing where to expand. We know this is just the beginning of what’s to come, but we’re excited to see Panera thriving here.”

Edinburg’s newest eatery, which has more than 2,100 locations nationwide, will create 40 full-time jobs with a capital investment of $5.9 million.
“This is a fantastic opportunity for Edinburg residents to enjoy a restaurant experience never before seen in the Rio Grande Valley,” said Mayor Ramiro Garza Jr. “Our list of retail establishments continues to expand, reflecting Edinburg’s growing attractiveness for business investment. Panera Bread is a continuation of the success we’re seeing in attracting new businesses to our city.”
Visitors can dine in or enjoy a drive-thru experience.
“We couldn’t be more excited to open the first Panera Bread restaurant in the region. As the Rio Grande Valley’s largest retail landlord and developer, we spend a lot of time recruiting first-class restaurants and retailers, and Panera Bread has been at the top of our list for the past five years,” said Will Collins, CEO of Merit Commercial Real Estate.
