The future of Michigan football changed suddenly and dramatically last week when five-star quarterback Bryce Underwood was transferred from LSU to the Wolverines.
The nation’s No. 1 high school prospect will be the face of head coach Sherone Moore’s rebuild of Ann Arbor, and expectations for Underwood could not be higher. In fact, the Belleville High School senior is already being compared to one of college football’s legendary figures.
247Sports director of scouting Andrew Ivins named former Texas star quarterback Vince Young, a Heisman Trophy winner and national champion, as a player to compare Underwood to. Underwood is a team backed by 247 national recruiting analyst Tom Roy.
“I think there’s a lot of similarities,” Roy told CBS Sports after news broke that Underwood had committed to Michigan. “He can run, he can throw…he’s established himself as the No. 1 player in the country and he’s got great talent. It’s a big, big win for the Wolverines.”
Comparisons between Underwood and Young should get Michigan fans excited. Texas’ star QB is one of the greatest QBs in school history, achieving at the highest level both individually and in leading the Longhorns to their most recent national title with a classic victory over USC in the Rose Bowl. Ta.
While it’s possible (and likely likely) that Moore and Michigan will enter the transfer portal to fill out a quarterback room that leaves a lot to be desired in 2024, Roy has someone else to play for the Wolverines. It’s hard to imagine leading the offense onto the field next fall.
“He’s 100 percent ready to play in Ann Arbor from the get-go,” Roy said. “There’s no one at Michigan that can beat him. He’s going to be that guy 100 percent. He’s going to be the starter opening week.”
It’s hard to overstate how big of a win the acquisition of Underwood was for Moore, who is nearing the end of his first season as Michigan’s head coach. The five-star quarterback could signal a move from the Wolverines under coach Jim Harbaugh to the Wolverines in the future.
The win belonged to Moore, and Michigan’s new head coach had to repair the broken relationship between the program and the Underwood family that occurred during Harbaugh’s tenure.
“If Jim Harbaugh had been there, none of this would have happened,” Roy said. “This became a real opportunity once Sherone Moore took over as head coach, but ultimately I think he feels more comfortable playing at Michigan than LSU. I think he’s a good fit and the future is bright for Ann Arbor.”
“Congratulations to Head Coach Sherone Moore and Offensive Coordinator/Quarterbacks Coach Kirk Campbell. This staff works extremely hard and brings together elite, elite talent, difference-makers, day-one contributors. We got it. Big, big pickup in Bryce.” Underwood. ”
