AUSTIN, Texas — Senior Lori Harmon reaches 600 career assists, helping the No. 5/6 Texas Longhorns (15-1, 2-0) win their second SEC championship and becoming the second player in program history to do so. He became the player with over 1,000 points and 600 assists. In the SEC home opener, they faced the Arkansas Razorbacks (7-10, 0-2) and won 90-56.
Senior Aaliyah Moore recorded her first double-double of the season and eighth of her career with 17 points and 14 rebounds. Junior Kayla Oldacre recorded her second double-double of the season with 10 points and 11 rebounds. They were followed by four other Longhorns in double digits: Justise Carlton (15), Jordan Lee (13), Brianna Preston (11) and Harmon (12). Ta.
Moore put Texas on the board, giving Texas a 6-0 lead and forcing five Arkansas turnovers in just under three minutes. Carlton had eight points and Moore had eight rebounds for the Longhorns, who outscored the Razorbacks 20-13 at the end of the first quarter.
Lee made back-to-back 3-pointers with assists from Harmon and Moore to give the Longhorns a 9-0 lead. The Longhorns held the Razorbacks to a five-minute barrage of shots, ending the first half with a 40-25 lead.
The Longhorns started the second half and held the lead with Holle’s five points. Moore went on to score nine points for the Longhorns. Texas ended the third quarter with a score of 68-49 on a 7-0 run.
With Carlton’s 3-point shot and Harmon’s assist, Texas’ momentum continued into the final quarter. Junior guard Njakarenga Mwenentanda came off the bench to end the Longhorns’ scoring drought and assist on Lee’s fourth 3-point shot of the game. The Longhorns finished the game on a 9-0 run, with a final score of 90-56.
The Longhorns are next scheduled to take on No. 19 Alabama at the Moody Center on Thursday, Jan. 9, with information on SECN+ starting at 7 p.m.
