Prairie View, Texas –– Florida A&M (5-3, 3-1 SWAC) will travel to Texas to continue its winning streak on Saturday against Prairie View A&M (4-5, 2-3 SWAC). The Rattlers showed dominance on both sides of the ball with a 52-28 homecoming victory over Texas Southern.
FAMU’s offense made strides, with quarterback Daniel Richardson scoring a historic five-touchdown performance. He is the first Rattlers to accomplish that feat since Rashaun McKay in 2021 against Arkansas-Pine Bluff. The Rattlers’ ground game has also emerged as a strength for the team. The last few weeks have helped keep the offense balanced.
“If we can run the football effectively, our passing game will only get a lot better,” FAMU head coach James Colsey III said.
The Rattlers’ defense continues to be stifling, holding Texas Southern to less than 200 yards of total offense last week. They will face a Prairie View offense that has struggled this season, allowing 23 sacks while averaging just 319.8 yards per game.
But Coach Colsey is not taking Prairie View lightly, especially given the history of both teams meeting in last year’s SWAC Championship Game.
“They have a very good quarterback, a very good receiving core, and they play hard on the defensive side of the football,” Colsey noted. “If we don’t play well, we could come back as the upset football team because we didn’t go up there and take care of our business.”
FAMU’s keys to victory include maintaining a strong running game and protecting the football on the road. The Panthers defense likes to apply pressure, which could create opportunities in the passing game.
“When you go on the road, there are two things you have to do: you have to run the football and you have to not turn the ball over,” Colsey said. “If you can do those two things, you have a great chance.”
This matchup pitted two statistically contrasting teams, with FAMU averaging 363.1 yards per game while allowing 344.9 yards per game. At the same time, Prairie View’s offense has struggled to find consistency, averaging 319.8 yards per game while giving up 393.8 yards per game. The Rattlers will look to take advantage of these as they continue their march towards the SWAC Championship.
Kickoff is scheduled for Saturday, November 9th at 3pm ET on ESPN+ at Panther Stadium in Prairie View.
