Ewers spoke with the media and skipped to head to a private meeting with the Miami Dolphins.
Historically, Texas track and field has had a reputation as one of the nation’s most elite programs in terms of media access and interview protocols. Student-athletes with well-known names like quarterback Quinn Ewers are closely managed by the sports intelligence department (commonly known as SIDS) within Texas Athletics.
According to Texas Football Bobby Burton, on Tuesday’s Texas Pro Day in Austin, Ewors skipped an informal media opportunity to meet with representatives of the Miami Dolphins at the end of the session. Although availability was not officially planned, the decision sparked complaints against one member of the media who regularly covers Longhorn.
SB Nation producer Wescott Eberts has expressed his dissatisfaction with Ewers’ absence on social media.
Danny Davis, a Texas Longhorns writer from Austin America, said, “As a media member, we don’t owe an interview with anyone. You can argue for the benefits of chatting with the media, but if you were disappointed because you were expecting your Quinn quote, you couldn’t get it.”
Although Texas student-athletes are usually adhere to scheduled media sessions, it is not uncommon for players to ask a few kahufu fe questions from beat writers who regularly cover the team. These informal exchanges are often considered professional courtesy rather than obligatory.
Eberts announced an apology Tuesday night after receiving more than 40,000 views, including over 100 comments and 40 retweets. Eberts and SB Nation have yet to comment further.
