Austin, Texas – Former Texas Governor Rick Perry is returning to Texas politics.
Perry has served as governor longer than anyone else and is currently helping House Speaker Dade Phelan keep the job.
“I’m joking, but my wife said that if I retired and I hung out all the time, my wife would strangle me,” Perry said.
Rick Perry left the Governor’s Mansion and the State Capitol in 2015 and moved to the Round Top, which serves as Texas’ antique capitol every spring and fall. But don’t get me wrong, Rick Perry doesn’t want to be a relic of the past.
“I don’t think retirement would ever be on my radar screen,” Perry said.
Rick Perry is back in the game to join embattled House Speaker Dade Phelan’s staff as a senior adviser.
“Giving good advice. Talking to members about the issues that are out there. And I told him I would be happy to do that. And I’m going to continue to do that until the end of the year. And, you know, at this particular point in time. , the House race is kind of the focus,” Perry said.
In some ways, he will be the political fence mender.
“If I can help bring people together, I will definitely wear that title,” Perry said.
The first reconstruction project under the Capitol Dome has already been completed, Perry said.
More stories:
“The speaker’s campaign is over. I mean, he has the votes, he has the promises. And, you know, some people may be talking about there being another path or something else. They’re just speaking through their thoughts.” In my opinion, hat,” Perry said.
The current focus is on helping Phelan find ways to address hot topics such as school choice. Perry said another legislative priority includes expanding mental health treatment for veterans.
“I’m willing to put my reputation on the line to help the young men and women who have put their lives on the line for us, and in some cases paid a pretty harsh price in terms of post-traumatic stress and traumatic brain injury. ” Perry said.
Finding new ways to feed power into the grid is another. Perry advocates for developers of small modular nuclear power plants.
“So I’m excited to be able to help them and tell the public that here is a technology that could be a real answer to our energy needs,” Perry said. .
However, there are limits to Rick Perry’s return to politics.
“No one is going to grade my paper because I haven’t done my part,” Perry said.
Staying in the political game does not entail running for political office again.
“I think I’m a guy in the back room. I don’t think my name will be on any ballots that people vote in the future,” Perry said.
This limited approach also applies to federal politics. He said he would decline an offer to return to the presidential cabinet if Trump wins re-election. But he will offer advice on who to hire.
