Robert C. “Bob” Wacker, chairman of Bert Ogden Motors, is a game-changer in the Rio Grande Valley. His business, philanthropic and educational accomplishments left an indelible mark on South Texas. Recipient of the 2024 Golden Eagle Award from the Rio Grande Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, Mr. Vacker’s story reflects a deep-rooted commitment to personal excellence and community well-being.
Vacker’s journey began in Gonzales, Texas, and ended in Edinburg, where he attended high school and worked in his father’s business, Vacker Lumber Supply. This early experience instilled a strong work ethic and entrepreneurial spirit. After graduation, he earned a degree in accounting from Texas A&M University and joined the Corps of Cadets to develop his leadership skills. Vacker later applied these skills to his roles as a financial analyst for Shell Oil and as a soldier in the U.S. Army at the end of the Vietnam War, experiences that taught him resilience and discipline.
In 1983, Vacker returned to Edinburg and joined his father-in-law’s dealership, Bert Ogden Motors, as sales manager. His dedication soon led him to General Motors Dealer College, where he became dealer principal in 1992. Under his stewardship, Bert Ogden Motors transformed from a single dealership to a network of 20 locations with 21 franchise lines, creating more than 1,000 jobs in the region. Wacker said: I wanted to create something that would give back. ” His business model combines integrity and community involvement, and Bert Ogden Motors has earned a reputation for superior service and enduring trust in the Rio Grande Valley.
Philanthropy is at the heart of Mr. Wacker’s legacy. He and his wife, Janet Ogden Vacker, have supported South Texas through significant contributions to education, health care, and veterans programs. They founded the Robert C. Vacker College of Business & Entrepreneurship at the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV), an institution dedicated to developing future leaders and promoting entrepreneurship. Reflecting on his motivation, Wacker explains: “Education is one of the most powerful tools we can offer our communities. It transforms lives, families, and futures.” His support is a space that embodies the couple’s belief in youth empowerment. It also led to the construction of the Robert and Janet Vacker Football Stadium.
Mr. Vacker’s work with UTRGV exemplifies his commitment to education and economic development. Many UTRGV alumni have joined Bert Ogden Motors and benefited from Mr. Wacker’s guidance, including CEO Tasha del Barrio and Chief Administrative Officer Jorge Gutierrez. “It is a privilege to work with so many talented young people who want to give back to their communities,” he says. This dedication to community impact has been noted. The Golden Eagle Award, which will be presented to Vacker on October 25, 2024, will recognize his significant contributions. The ceremony recognized his business success and extensive philanthropy. “It is humbling to receive this award,” Vacker said. “This is a testament to the hard work of our team and the great spirit of the Valley. Together, we are building something bigger than any of us.”
At the event, KRGV-TV5 Meteorologist Tim Smith referred to Vacker as a pillar of the community and said its success demonstrates the power of combining business and social responsibility. Throughout his career, Vacker has prioritized a culture of giving, influenced by his father and father-in-law, both respected entrepreneurs and community advocates. He often speaks of Janet’s great spirit: “Janet gives from her heart. She inspires me and everyone around her to think beyond ourselves.” Their joint efforts have created a generous legacy and contributed to the growth of the Rio Grande Valley. and has inspired others to contribute to the welfare of others.
