Since joining the university in 2019, I have been instrumental in introducing integrative medicine into the preclinical curriculum and leading clinical skills training for first- and second-year medical students.
Dr. Slater’s career began after receiving his MD from the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio in 2013. He completed his training at the Memorial Hermann Family Medicine Residency Program in Houston from 2013 to 2016. After training, he pursued: He completed a fellowship in integrative and behavioral medicine at the University of Texas Medical Branch, where he also served as a clinical instructor from 2016 to 2017. His passion for education led him to a full-time teaching position at the University of the Incarnate Word. He was subsequently promoted from assistant professor to associate professor.
In addition to his academic role, Dr. Slater held various positions at the University of Texas Medical Branch, including attending physician and clinical assistant professor from 2017 to 2019. He also served as an adjunct clinical assistant professor at the University of Texas Medical Branch. His dedication to medical education is further evidenced by his involvement with the National Osteopathic Physician Examination Board as an examiner and developer of the Comprehensive Osteopathic Physician Licensing Examination.
Dr. Slater’s educational background is extensive, including a Master of Public Health in Global Health from the University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston in 2016 and a Bachelor of Science in Chemical Engineering from the University of Texas at Austin in 2008. -Certified in family medicine by the American Board of Family Medicine and in integrative medicine by the American Board of Integrative Medicine.
Throughout his career, Dr. Slater has been actively involved in various professional organizations. He serves as a course director and faculty member at the Academy of Integrative Health Medicine (AIHM) and advises the Incarnate Word University Lifestyle Medicine Interest Group under the American Society of Lifestyle Medicine. Additionally, he is a member of the American Academy of Family Physicians.
Beyond his professional life, Dr. Slater is committed to civic engagement through his role as a volunteer advisor for the University of the Incarnate Word Community Garden, the AIHM Student Alliance, and Medical Students for a Sustainable Future. He attributes his overall success as a professional to his strong interest, receptivity, enthusiasm and team approach. His path into medicine was influenced by his family, who guided him into the field, coupled with a genuine desire to help people and contribute positively to society.
