August 26, 2024 – Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo officials are proud to award $1.2 million in additional educational funding to 101 outstanding Texas college students through the Rodeo Merit Scholarship Program.

Achievement scholarships are awarded to Rodeo Scholars who are pursuing a bachelor’s degree at a Texas college or university, have completed four semesters, taken at least 60 hours of coursework and have a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or higher. Each student will receive an additional scholarship of $4,000 for each qualifying semester.

“They have demonstrated hard work and dedication throughout their journey as scholarship recipients over the years, and winning this Merit Scholarship is yet another testament to that,” said Chris Bohlman, Rodeo’s president and CEO. “These scholars are some of the best people representing the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo. We are honored to support them on their higher education journey and proud of the work they continue to do.”

These Achievement Scholarships are awarded following the initial Rodeo Scholarships and provide up to a total of $36,000 in educational funding per student. These scholars are attending 15 colleges and universities in Texas, with the top schools being Texas A&M University, University of Texas at Austin, University of Houston and Texas Tech University. These students have chosen 50 different fields of study, with the top majors being Biology, Animal Science, Finance, Psychology, Economics, Nursing and Mechanical Engineering. Of the 101 students, 25% are new to high school and 43% are new to college.

The Achievement Scholarship is part of the Rodeo’s annual commitment to Texas youth and education, with more than $27 million donated in 2024 for scholarships, junior show exhibitors, education program grants and graduate assistantships. Since 1932, the Rodeo has contributed more than $600 million to Texas youth and education.
