The San Antonio Democrat said gun violence will continue to occur because of Texas’ “lax gun control laws.”
SAN ANTONIO — State Sen. Rolando Gutierrez, a staunch supporter of gun control, says the same thing appears to be happening again in Texas.
The San Antonio Democrat, whose district includes Uvalde, supports the State Fair of Texas’ decision to ban guns at this year’s event.
The policy change comes after a gunman opened fire at last year’s fair, wounding three people.
Fair officials insisted that hundreds of armed officers would be stationed at the venue and refused to accede to Republican demands to reverse that policy.
Senator Gutierrez believes gun violence will never end in Texas.
“Republicans have loose gun laws. They keep doubling and tripling them down and worse things are happening. We know what happened at the state fair last year. We know what happened in Allen. Uvalde, San Jacinto, all the other incidents,” the Democrat said on Inside Texas Politics.
The senator also responded to news that some video of officers responding to the 2022 Robb Elementary School shooting was withheld from the public due to a court order.
After a lengthy legal battle, Uvalde city officials have finally released reams of video and audio from the shooting that left 19 students and two teachers dead.
But days after the initial release, police said more videos of officers had been discovered.
An investigation is ongoing into why the video was not included in the release.
Senator Gutierrez says he has no knowledge of what is shown in the video.
“I don’t think anybody knows. But it goes to a big part of the flaws in the investigation by the District Attorney’s Office. She only charged two people, she should have charged all of the DPS officers, the Texas Rangers. That didn’t happen. It just strikes me as a flaw in her investigation,” the Democrat said.
