Austin, Texas (KLTV) — State Sen. Brian Hughes (R. Tyler) said he will announce whether he will run for Texas Attorney General after the 89th legislative session ends on June 2.
“Now we’re focusing on ending this session and passing good laws and we’ll be making an announcement about the Attorney General as soon as the session is over,” Hughes said.
“I don’t think it’ll take more than a week or two from the end of the session,” Hughes said.
In April, an East Texas legislator who has served in the Texas Legislature for more than 20 years said he was considering running. The position opened following Attorney General Ken Paxton’s decision to run for the US Senate, establishing a major Republican contest against Senator John Cornyn.
State Sen. Mays Middleton (R-Galveston) announced the Attorney General’s run at GOP Primary. John Bash, a former US lawyer for the Western District of Texas, took part in the contest last month, but ended the race citing family health issues.
“Of all red states, Texas has the largest attorney general’s office and we are in a leading position,” Hughes added. “It needs to catch up. It cannot be changed. The pattern set by current Attorney General Ken Paxton is a model to follow as long as it runs the Attorney General’s office.”
