Newson was traveling through East Texas from his home in Shreveport at the time.

After being pulled over, Newson jumped out of the Chevrolet Tahoe and fired at Dickerson, striking the law officer six times. Dickerson fought back and struck Newson in the leg three times as he fell to the ground. Newson then rushed back to Shreveport and Dickerson died on the side of the road.
Shreveport police found the officer-murder suspect on eastbound Interstate 20. A brief pursuit in which Newson fired at more officers ended with him flipping his car and being chased down Buncombe Street between West 70th Street and Interstate 20.
Paxton said Newson still had the weapon, a large amount of additional ammunition, marijuana and cash in his possession at the time of his arrest.
“Mr. Newson was charged with capital murder of a peace officer,” Paxton said. “The jury unanimously determined that Mr. Newson was a continuing threat to society and that there were no mitigating factors that would preclude the death penalty for his crimes.”
