DALLAS — North Texas-based restaurant group Sun Holdings has acquired Freebird’s World Burritos, announcing plans to expand the fast-casual restaurant chain.
Farmers Branch-based Sun Holdings Inc. has acquired the Austin-based chain known for its customizable burritos for an undisclosed amount. The deal includes 64 locations in Texas.
Sun Holdings operates more than 1,500 restaurants and stores in 27 states, including Applebee’s, Arby’s, Burger King, Golden Corral, IHOP, McAlister’s, Papa John’s, Popeye’s and Taco Bueno.
“Freebirds brings a unique and vibrant energy to our portfolio. The brand’s commitment to quality ingredients and customer-centric approach resonates well with us as an operator,” said Sun Holdings CEO Guillermo Perales. “We believe we can learn from Freebirds about customer engagement and menu innovation while also bringing our operational and growth expertise.” Perales added, “This acquisition is particularly noteworthy for Sun Holdings as it demonstrates our ability to grow not only as a franchisee, but also as a brand owner. Freebirds is poised for growth and we have an ambitious expansion strategy and are excited about the initiative.”
The Freebirds moved their national headquarters from Emeryville, Calif., to Austin in 2015, sister station KVUE reported at the time, and had more than 100 locations at the time.
Freebirds first opened in Santa Barbara, California in 1987. The first Texas location is in College Station.
