AUSTIN — University of Texas Longhorns offensive tackle Kelvin Banks is projected to be a top-10 pick in the 2025 NFL Draft and is recognized as one of the best players in the country heading into this college football season.
So when he offers up some praise for the promising Longhorns edge rusher heading into the game, it’s best to take notice.
Banks spoke to the media via Zoom on Thursday and discussed the development of sophomore player Colton Basek, who got a chance to play against him in pass protection during the team’s recent scrimmage.
“Colton’s done a great job,” Banks said. “I had the opportunity. We had scrimmages and I got a chance to play against him all the time. He’s improved so much since he was a freshman. He’s gone out there and practiced and he’s been great ever since coming back from a minor injury. So for him to go out there and show he’s available and ready to play was the biggest thing. I saw that in scrimmages. He’s looking pretty good.”
Vasek did not play in a game as a freshman last season but could make his collegiate debut during the 2024 season.
Vasek, a product of Austin’s Westlake High School, was teammates with current Texas safety Michael Taaffe and was a four-star recruit in the 2023 class and initially planned to commit to the Oklahoma Sooners but then transferred to the Longhorns.
At the time he committed, Vasek was the 21st player in Texas’ 2023 recruiting class, which was anchored by quarterback Arch Manning and receiver Jontay Cook II.
