Texas A&M football is preparing for a bowl game against USC.
Since the loss to Texas, the Aggies have experienced some big moments. We’ve seen departures, but we’ve also seen big signings to the Aggie football program.
Head coach Mike Elko took some time to talk to the media today and mentioned another big change regarding the upcoming bowl game against the Trojans: a positive culture change.
Elko comments on lack of Vegas Bowl opt-outs
When asked about opting out, Elko revealed that only three players will opt out of the Vegas Bowl.
These three are not as surprising as they seem. Elko listed Nick Skorton, Shemar Stewart and Shemar Turner as “key players” who will not play in the bowl game.
Shortly thereafter, another reporter asked Elko, almost shocked, about the number of key members opting out.
When the reporter asked about how it’s not unusual to see a significant number of opt-outs, Elko answered in a way that made the Aggie football program look upbeat and professional.
“I think this probably speaks to the culture. Some of our seniors are going to play in really big games against major brands like USC and validate their status heading into the NFL offseason. I think we have a chance to gamble,” Elko said. .
It was also an opportunity for Elko to understand the new era of college bowl games. He said he supports some players opting out, saying some players don’t need to go through a bowl game just because it could hurt their draft stock.
“For some of them it just didn’t make sense to play any more games. I think our kids trust the culture here. They just trust the coaches and I I trust what they say,” Elko said.
