Texas A&M Aggies, who runs through Rueben Owens, honestly rated quarterback Marcel Reed when speaking to the media on Wednesday.
Having spent most of last season recovering from a knee injury and on the sidelines, Owens is preparing for his first full season with Reed. With a ton of around him at this point, Owens believes Reid needs to work on his confidence as a passerby.
“Marcel is throwing pretty well,” Owens said. “He can throw the ball, so he has to be more confident in throwing it.”
Texas A&M fans don’t want to hear that the team’s starting quarterback must be more confident as a passerby. For dual threats like Reed, it is no secret that consistent passing production is a critical area of potential improvement. Of course, there are no perfect players, and leads are no exception. He showed a flash of his passing ability of this past season, but still had a big chunk of his offensive production on his feet.
In 2024, Reid scored 147 of 240 passes for 1,864 yards, 15 touchdowns and six interceptions, adding 116 carries for 547 yards and seven scores on the ground. Three of those touchdowns beat LSU.
As for Owens, he returned to the field later this season, losing to Texas and USC in the Las Vegas Bowl. Against the Trojans, he had 13 carries for 56 yards and 1 catch for 6 yards.
In 2023, he made 101 carries for 385 yards and three touchdowns, adding 12 catches for 109 yards into the air. Owens also returned 12 kickoffs for 249 yards. His rushing yards were third in the team behind Amari Daniels and Reveon Moss, respectively.
“It really hurts because I felt like I had a good fall camp and was going to have a big sophomore year,” Owens said of his injuries. “I had to get through it and get to work right away, so I was able to get back as quickly as possible.”
Texas A&M will begin its season at home with UTSA on August 30th.
