COLLEGE STATION, Texas (KBTX) – Texas A&M associate head coach Phil Stevenson announced his retirement Wednesday after 26 seasons on the Aggie staff, according to a release from the athletic department.
Stephenson has served as associate head coach for the past 15 seasons and was one of the mainstays of the Aggies’ tactical play throughout his time at A&M.
“Phil has been an invaluable asset to the Texas A&M football program over the past quarter century,” head coach G. Guerrieri said in a statement. “Much of our success is directly tied to his tenure on our coaching staff. He not only helped us achieve long runs in the NCAA Tournament and win conference championships, but he also He also played a major role in recruiting and developing players, helping them realize their dreams as collegiate and professional athletes. I know he will leave our program to achieve greatness in the next chapter of his life.”
During his tenure, Stephenson led the Aggies to nine conference regular season championships, seven tournament championships and 24 NCAA Tournament appearances. The Aggies reached the Elite Eight seven times under his watch.
In 2003, he was named National Assistant Coach of the Year by Scholastic Coaches & Athletic Directors magazine.
However, the Aggies just finished an 8-9-2 season with a 3-5-2 conference record and missed the NCAA Tournament for the second time in Stevenson’s tenure. The last time was in 2021, when A&M finished seventh in the SEC. The Aggies have not made it past the second round of the NCAA Tournament since 2020.
Stephenson was by Guerrieri’s side for most of his career at A&M, serving as the program’s only head coach since its inception in 1993. Guerrieri’s contract has been extended to 2022, and his term ends in March 2024. His current annual income is $250,000. , a buyout is guaranteed if the university chooses to terminate without cause.
