Lt. Col. John D. Fleming (Ret. 1994, U.S. Marine Corps) has been appointed director of the Don & Ellie Knauss Veterans Resource & Support Center (VRSC) within the Texas A&M University Student Affairs Department.
Founded in 2012, VRSC provides individualized and ongoing support to undergraduate and graduate Aggie veterans and military-affiliated Aggies by helping them make a smooth transition to Texas A&M University and succeed at college. The department offers a welcoming space, peer leadership, innovative programs, and a variety of tools and resources to advance an individual’s academic and personal success.
Fleming has served as director of operations for the Texas A&M University Corps of Cadets since 2020 and previously served as director of cadet training.
“It will be my honor to continue to serve our current students. As one of the premier veteran-serving institutions in the nation, service to country is deeply rooted in the very core of Texas A&M University,” Fleming said. “Aggies veterans, military-affiliated Aggies and their families earn and deserve the best we have to offer.”
“John brings a wealth of experience to the VRSC director position,” said Brigadier General Joe E. Ramirez (Ret.), vice chancellor for student affairs at Texas A&M University. “I am confident that John will use his background and experience to further build on the strong foundation built by Jerry Smith and take the VRSC to even greater heights. I look forward to working with John and the great team at VRSC as they strive to support student veterans at Texas A&M University.”
Fleming will succeed Col. Jerry Smith (Ret., U.S. Marine Corps, Class of 1982), who has led the department since its inception in 2012.
“I am excited to further the great work accomplished by Col. Jerry Smith and his team of dedicated professionals at VRSC,” Fleming added. “The success of our student veterans will continue to be a top priority as we set new and exciting standards in serving veterans.”
Fleming served as a motor transport and logistics officer with the 1st Marine Division, 1st and 2nd Marine Logistics Groups, and 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing. Fleming was assigned to the 11th and 24th Marine Expeditionary Units and completed multiple combat deployments in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom.
Fleming retired from active duty at the rank of lieutenant colonel in 2015 after commanding Marine Aircraft Support Squadron 371 in Yuma, Arizona.
He earned a Bachelor of Science in Exercise Physiology from Texas A&M University and a Master of Arts in Military Studies from Marine Corps University in Quantico, Virginia.
Fleming and his wife, Amanda Miller of McAllen, who he has been married to for more than 29 years, have two children, Garrett and Gracen.
