What you need to know
The goal of the new college, called the College of Marine Sciences and Oceanography, will be to “lead in innovation, education and discovery” and find ways to use marine and coastal resources sustainably, according to the announcement.
The program, which will be offered at the university, will address the economic, social, political and ecological aspects of coastal and ocean areas that make up what officials call a $1.5 trillion “blue economy” industry, according to the release. Other areas of focus will include economic prosperity, national security and environmental protection and conservation.
Locating the university on its Galveston campus gives the program direct access to the Gulf of Mexico, ports, shipping lanes and coastline, according to the university’s website.
