COLLEGE STATION, Texas — At its quarterly meeting on November 7, 2024, the Texas A&M University System Board of Governors resolved to change the name of Texas A&M University-Commerce to East Texas A&M University, effective immediately. It will take several months for the university to transition to the new name.
This decision reflects the Board’s commitment to strengthening the university’s identity and increasing its visibility in the region. The changes are intended to strengthen the university’s mission to serve the educational needs of East Texas’ rural and urban communities.
“A&M Commerce’s growth and success over the past several years has been remarkable,” said Board Chairman Bill Mahomes. “But to continue to build on this foundation, we must strengthen our identity and outreach. Changing the university’s name is an important step in our broader strategy to better serve our state. ”
Prime Minister John Sharp agreed.
“When the name A&M-Commerce was adopted, we righted a decades-old wrong,” he said. “It should have always been ET! ‘East Texas A&M’ restores historic pride to a great university.” ”
The rebranding to East Texas A&M University is in line with the university’s goal of increasing its profile. It is also an opportunity to highlight the University’s commitment to community engagement and educational excellence.
“We believe this name change better reflects our heritage and mission and allows us to connect more deeply with the communities we serve,” said East Texas A&M University President Mark Rudin. “I will.” “This is more than just a name. It’s about creating a stronger, more unified vision for our future.”
The transition to the new name will include updates to the university’s branding, signage, website, URLs, email addresses, and communications materials over the coming months. The university community and stakeholders will be engaged throughout this process to ensure a smooth transition.
