Shemar Stewart will not participate in Texas A&M’s upcoming bowl game. The junior defensive lineman announced Monday that he has declared for the NFL Draft in April.
A former five-star recruit, Stewart arrived with high expectations based on his size and athleticism. He was a mainstay on the D-line throughout his three seasons with the Aggies, but his track record is unremarkable compared to other prospects who are considered potential edge rushers at the NFL level. Stewart only recorded 1.5 sacks each year, but set career highs in total stops (31) and tackles for loss (six) in 2024.
Considering his 6-6, 290-pound frame, Stewart certainly has the potential to play inside after turning pro. His ability to view time as a defensive end could further increase his versatility, which will be key in determining his draft stock. Stewart’s turnaround will be weighed against his limited production as teams consider him an opening day option.
ESPN’s Matt Miller and The Ringer’s Danny Kelly have Stewart in the middle of their first-round order in their latest mock draft. A team making a notable investment will look to Stewart’s improved athleticism, and Stewart’s performance at the combine in March will be important in establishing his defensive coverage during the draft. A strong showing in this regard could increase the number of suitors interested in adding him during the spring.
There will be a number of high-profile edge rushers available on the first day of this year’s draft, and we’ll have to wait and see to what extent Stewart is viewed as a hybrid (rather than strictly five-technique) defender. That would be interesting. A few months from now. His stock could fluctuate significantly during the pre-draft process.
