For this weekend’s Las Vegas Classic, the Texas baseball team will rely on the same rotation they used during the first two weekends of the season.
Jared Spencer (0-0, 0.90 ERA) will face Washington on Friday. Luke Harrison (1-0, 0.93) will face Texas Tech on Saturday. Kade Bing (0-0, 5.40) is the scheduled starter against Illinois on Sunday.
Spencer, Harrison and Bing are all left-handed pitchers. However, there was another southpaw that produced a buzz at UFCU Dishfarkfield last weekend.
Freshman Dylan Volantis was almost perfect for a relief outing that lasted four innings as he defeated Dartmouth 4-1 on Sunday. Volantis released Bing in the fifth inning and only hit one for the rest of the game. Volantis also got a double playground after giving up his eighth single.
Was it enough effort to convince Texas coach Jim Schlossnaggle that Volantis deserves a spot in his weekend rotation? no. But the answer Schlossnaggle gave on Sunday had more to do with statistics and the Southeastern Conference than anything Volantis had done.
Schlossnagle explained.
“A lot of that applies to freshman position players, and that’s very hard (to play in the SEC).
Schlossnagle pointed out Texas A&M star Ryan Prager as an example. Prager was one of the SEC’s best pitchers and won the College World Series in 2024 with the Schlossnagle-Coached Aggies run. He then missed the 2023 season after requiring Tommy John’s surgery.
“Pluger has just been beaten all season and doesn’t want that to happen to Dylan.
The California native, Volantis turned his commitment from USC after selecting him in the 20th round of the 2024 MLB draft before finishing in Texas after turning down athletics. Volantis said he chose Texas for his coaching staff and the history of the program.
With two appearances and six innings, Volantis is 1-0 with a 2.70 ERA. He registered four strikeouts in both the state of Oklahoma and relief against Dartmouth.
“I think we’ll have some demons over the next few years,” junior Max Grubbs said of the young pitcher on the Texas roster. “I mean, we have great pitchers. They all, all of them, have so many advantages. I’m excited to see them grow.”
