In the wake of Hurricane Beryl, Texas communities have come together to help with recovery efforts and care for hundreds of injured and orphaned animals. The Houston SPCA’s Wildlife Center has rescued nearly 1,100 wild animals since the hurricane struck the Texas coast, including Mississippi kites, mourning doves, collared pigeons, opossums and squirrels.
The Austin Humane Society has also been playing a key role in the rescue of stray cats and dogs who have been displaced. Chief Operating Officer Dr. Katie Luke emphasized the importance of moving animals out of the storm’s path to keep them safe and allow local shelters to focus on urgent needs. While Austin has not been as heavily affected by the power outages, the society is working to move animals from shelters on the coast.
Dr. Luke emphasized the need for community support and encouraged Austin residents to temporarily adopt or foster a pet. Donations and contributions through the shelter’s Amazon wishlist are also welcomed to help care for the animals. For more information or to donate, visit AustinHumaneSociety.org.
