Freshman standout Tre Johnson had 21 points and Kadyn Shedrick had 14 points and 11 rebounds as Texas defeated Delaware State 90-68 on Friday in Austin, Texas.
The Longhorns (6-1) never trailed, leading by 19 points at halftime and by as many as 24 midway through the second half and in the final minutes. Delaware State never got closer than 17 points after halftime. Johnson has led Texas in scoring in five of his seven career games.
Tramon Mark scored 15 points and Arthur Calma added 13 points for the Longhorns, who won their sixth straight game after losing to Ohio State in Las Vegas in the season opener. Robert Smith led Delaware State (3-5) with 22 points, Martaz Robinson had 15 points, Kaseem Watson had 11 points and 10 rebounds, and Corey Perkins added 10 points.
The Longhorns gained momentum, scoring 10 of their first 12 points, culminating with Kalma’s layup 17:30 into the first half. Texas increased its advantage to 15 points with Johnson’s 3-pointer with 12:11 left in the first half, and Tramon Mark’s basket just over a minute later increased the lead to 25-6. Delaware State found its footing and Robinson made two free throws with 3:08 left in the first half to cut the deficit to just 12 points. The Longhorns fought back with a 9-0 run to build their largest lead of the game before Watson’s layup made it 41-22 at the break.
Texas outscored the Hornets 43.8 percent to 27.3 percent, and by halftime Johnson and Calma led all scorers with 10 points apiece. The Longhorns also forced nine turnovers, leading to 13 points in the first 20 minutes of the game. Smith’s seven points led Delaware State in the first half.
Both teams played fairly evenly for the first four minutes of the second half, but the visiting team still couldn’t get any closer to Texas’ effective lead, and it never did. –Field level media
