For the first time since 2010, Texas will open the college football season ranked in the top five in the Associated Press rankings. That’s not surprising given the amount of talent at Texas’ football camp heading into the 2024 college football season. Texas, ranked No. 4 in the initial AP rankings, lost to Washington, 12-2, in the College Football Playoff semifinals last season. Texas returns quarterback Quinn Ewers and four starting offensive linemen after losing a top-five pass-catching starter. While there may not be as much competition at camp on the offensive line, the Longhorns have plenty of talent at the skill positions heading into the new college football season.
CJ Baxter, expected to be Texas’ starting running back, suffered a season-ending knee injury, leaving Texas’ football roster in further uncertainty for 2024. But with a ton of talented players taking touches, is Texas ready to return to the College Football Playoff? Texas Longhorns practice highlights
A big topic of conversation in Texas football has been the running back position and the unfortunate injuries that have plagued the running back position. It started last year when NFL-bound Jonathan Brooks tore his ACL late in the season. Then the team’s leading running back, CJ Baxter, suffered a season-ending knee injury earlier this month. Just a week later, three-star freshman Christian Clark tore his Achilles tendon, ending his season.
Now, third-year running back Jadon Blue is the only running back on the roster with more than 12 carries in his collegiate career. Blue was a third-string player last year but is now projected to be a starter, but the competition for carries will continue. Freshman Jerick Gibson is a four-star recruit and the No. 3 running back in the 2024 class. Whether Gibson can take the veteran Blue’s spot will be something to watch during Texas football camp. The ground game is a big part of the Longhorns’ offense, and last year’s team ranked in the top 20 nationally in rushing yards. Stay tuned to Horns247 for the latest updates on the Texas running back competition.
Another topic of conversation around Texas football concerns the Longhorns’ tight ends. Ja’Tavion Sanders was third at Texas in receptions (45) and receiving yards (682) last season before being selected in the fourth round of the 2024 NFL Draft by the Carolina Panthers. Gunnar Helm is in his fourth year at Texas but has just 19 receptions in that span. Given his experience within the program, he is one of the prime candidates for an expanded role, although the role could also go to a top player from the transfer portal.
Texas acquired Amari Niblack from Alabama, and the 6-foot-4 tight end was the Crimson Tide’s third-highest receiving receiver last year with 327 receiving yards. Niblack was ranked as a top 100 recruit coming out of high school by 247Sports and is the team’s top tight end in the transfer portal this offseason. Niblack had his best performance last season with a 45-yard reception and a touchdown against Texas, so head coach Steve Sarkisian and his staff are well aware of the talent they have acquired.
