Houston – Tens of thousands of Texans are said to be part of a privacy invasion that dates back to 2021.
The Texas Health and Human Services Board (HHSC) told another 33,529 Texan who receives agency services “provided health, personally identifiable or sensitive personal information may have been inappropriately accessed, used or disclosed.”

According to HHSC, the data breach dates back from June 2021 to January 2025.
The state agency was first notified of a privacy infringement on November 21, 2024, and a few days later confirmed the violation on December 5, 2024.
Originally, the state agency said at least 61,000 people may have stolen or accessed the information. The number is currently 94,000, according to a message from the state agency.
The following victim information that may have been accessed or stolen include:

Home address
telephone number
date of birth
email address
social security number
Medicaid and Medicare Identification Numbers
Financial information
Employment information
Bank Information
Benefit Information
Health information
Insurance information
Medical Information
Certificate Information
License Information
Other personal information
It is important to know that the data you access differs from person to person.
“The data that was inappropriately accessed, used or disclosed was not the same for everyone,” the agency wrote.
Nine Texas HHSC employees were fired as a result of an investigation.
Employee misconduct was identified on July 9, 2024.
“HHSC is working to strengthen internal security management and implement additional fraud prevention measures including monitoring and alerts to detect suspicious activity,” the agency wrote in a press release. “HHSC understands the impact of this privacy violation and is committed to protecting the confidential information of the people we serve.”
The addition of Texan added to the data breaches occurs during KPRC 2 investigations on SNAP skimming.

For those affected by data breaches, Texas HHSC offers two hearings: free credit surveillance and identity theft protection services.

Individuals affected by the violation will be notified by first-degree mail by April 30th.
