On Friday night, in Anna’s first UIL Class 5A Division II playoff game, the offensive duo of Edward Chumley and Geondre Williams came up big in the second half.
The Coyotes defeated Colleyville Heritage 45-10, but Anna led 10-7 at halftime and 17-10 entering the fourth.
Chumley scored three points, and Williams passed for another one.
Williams threw for 300 yards and completed 19 of 29 passes. He had a great rebound after intercepting his third pass of the night.
The junior added 87 yards rushing and a fourth-quarter touchdown.
It’s a seventh straight win for the Coyotes, who enter the area round with a game scheduled for Friday against Abilene Wiley in Godley.
Three of the four teams in Districts 4-5A are still alive after the opening game.
Williams was a big reason for Anna’s success.
He threw for 2,655 yards, 29 touchdowns, eight interceptions, and completed 66 percent of his passes. He has 98 carries for 941 yards and 11 scores this season, and is just a few shy of 1,000 yards rushing.
Despite having a record of 23 wins and 4 losses in high school, he has received only five offers and has not attracted much attention.
North Texas offered him during this season, but he also had an offer from Texas State before he played a varsity game last spring. The three-star recruit also has offers from Louisiana Tech, Pittsburgh and UTSA.
“I think I’m a lot better as a quarterback than last year,” said Williams, who led the Coyotes to the 4A Division I title last year. “That’s what I had to work on over the summer. With me working on quarterbacking, more scouts came. Once this season is over, my stats, stars, The offer should go up significantly. I’m ready.”
His performance against Colleyville Heritage featured a number of big plays that accounted for nearly all of the Coyotes’ points.
On the first scoring drive, he hit Michael Kennedy for a 31-yard gain and reached Heritage’s 24-yard line.
He connected with Ashton Ansley on a field goal drive late in the second quarter for a 21-yard gain and reached the 21-yard line.
“We’ve got to finish the drive. It was a great two-minute practice, but we got stopped,” Williams said of settling for a 10-7 lead at intermission instead of 14-7.
His 24-yard rush set up Chumley’s touchdown run in the third quarter. Leading 17-10 entering the fourth, he connected with Ronald Bell for a 4-yard touchdown on the first play of the final quarter.
Early on that drive, he and Bell completed a 57-yard gain.
Williams ran for a 7-yard touchdown in the fourth. Once free, he becomes an elusive rusher. He has averaged more than 11 yards per carry in seven of his 11 games this year.
Anna’s only touchdown drive without a big play, rushing or passing, was a 78-yard two-play drive that ended with Chumley rushing for a score and finishing with a defensive pick-six.
“Our quarterback is one of the best players in the state,” Anna coach Seth Parr said. “And probably in America, he’s been proving that for two years.”
Parr believes Williams doesn’t get as much attention as he should because of his height. He has offers, but like many of his classmates in the Class of 2026, he has yet to visit any schools this fall.
Williams said he would like to visit campus after football season ends, but he hopes to do so in mid-December, like last year.
“He’s a winner and a good leader. He’s still growing and he still wants to grow, which is a big thing,” Parr said.
