AUSTIN – Governor Greg Abbott praised Texas for being a national jobs leader following the release of August jobs data showing a surge in hiring in Texas. Texas employers added 78,000 jobs in one month and 302,400 jobs in the past 12 months. Texas led all states in the number of jobs added in one month and over the past year, and again set new records for total employment, the number of Texans in the workforce and the size of the Texas workforce.
“Texas continues to lead the nation in innovation and job creation,” said Governor Abbott. “Our rich diversity is the foundation of our competitiveness. With a young, skilled, diverse and growing workforce and a wide range of world-class industries investing in Texas, Texas is uniquely positioned to remain an economic leader and chart a path to a brighter future through evolving market demands. In fact, every region of this great state has its own strengths and opportunities for hard-working Texans to aspire and thrive. Working with communities large and small, we will continue to build a bigger and better Texas for everyone.”
Below are the employment data for August released by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics and the Texas Workforce Commission.

Texas recorded its largest labor force in state history at 15,398,400, the highest on record. The number of employed people in Texas, including the self-employed, also reached a record high of 14,771,400. Texas added 78,000 nonfarm jobs in August, bringing total employment to 14,239,200, the highest on record. This was the highest number of jobs added in a single month in the nation. Texas added 302,400 nonfarm jobs from August 2023 to August 2024, leading all states and outpacing the nation in annual growth. Texas’ unemployment rate in August was 4.1%, 0.1% below the national average.
Yesterday in El Paso, Governor Abbott championed the role of entrepreneurs and small business owners in driving job growth across Texas in his keynote address at the Governor’s Small Business Summit, which kicked off Hispanic Heritage Month and celebrated the remarkable contributions Hispanic Texans have made to the state and the nation.
