AUSTIN — Texas Longhorns star point guard Rory Harmon has been a rock for the Texas team since arriving on campus in 2021. Now a senior, Harmon is just one of two players in the storied Texas program to reach the 1,000-point and 600-point milestones. We support you. She recorded her 600th assist on Sunday in the team’s 90-56 win over Arkansas.
Although he missed much of last season with a torn ACL in practice, Harmon surpassed both of those milestones this season. She had six assists against the Razorbacks and needs four more to rank second all-time in assists for Texas.
Texas won by a wide margin in front of more than 8,700 women’s basketball spectators, the seventh largest in Moody Center history, but head coach Vic Schaefer was not satisfied with his team’s performance.
“First of all, Lori, congratulations. 600 assists. That’s a lot of assists, a lot of passes,” Schaefer said. “To be honest, we didn’t play very well and I’m mad at myself. We had it a little easier against them on Friday, but we don’t handle easy situations very well. And, you know, we came in late, about 2 a.m., and that’s really just an excuse at the end of the day, but you know, we really had to do certain things today. It’s been a struggle, and I’ve had to coach better and teach better. I just think there’s a standard to play better. We all try to live up to it. And I think we’re trying to pursue perfection, whether it’s achievable or not, it’s probably not possible, but we’re still trying to pursue perfection.”
Harmon was far from perfect against Arkansas, but he still reached a career milestone. She finished with 12 points, going 5-11 from the field and making two free throw attempts, but most importantly, she shared the ball well.
Assists are a statistic that requires the involvement of multiple people, so Harmon gave all the credit to his teammates.
“It’s a great feeling and a huge honor to be part of a list of names like that, but you don’t do it alone,” Harmon said. “Obviously, Coach Schaefer puts us in great situations, and my teammates are obviously the best teammates in my heart. And really, like I said, it’s I really need to do it because I really can’t do it alone.” I would like to thank those around me for putting me in such a great position. ”
Texas is currently 14-1 overall and 2-0 in conference play.
Harmon and his teammates will return to the Moody Center on Thursday to take on the No. 19 Alabama Crimson Tide. The game will tip off at 7 p.m. and will be broadcast on SEC Network Plus.
