Junior quarterback Quinn Ewers has resolved concerns about his ankle ahead of the Texas Longhorns’ College Football Playoff quarterfinal matchup against Arizona State.
“I feel a lot better than I did then,” Ewers said of the ankle injury at Monday’s Peach Bowl media day.
Injuries were a hindrance throughout his time at Texas. Ewers missed each of his three seasons as a starter for the Longhorns due to injury.
But while Ewers has suffered two injuries this season, he only missed one, the first of which was a torticollis strain. The game was canceled because the University of Texas had wins over the University of Louisiana-Monroe and Mississippi State.
Then, just when it seemed like Ewers had rediscovered his progress, he suffered a high ankle sprain in a 31-14 win against Kentucky. However, despite the ankle sprain, Ewers was able to play while wearing a brace in the Longhorns’ 17-7 win over Texas A&M and 22-19 SEC Championship loss to Georgia. .
But with 10 days off between the SEC Championship and a 38-24 win over Clemson in the first round of the playoffs, Ewers is “as healthy as he’s been in a while,” according to co-offensive coordinator AJ Milwee. That’s what he feels. .
“That’s one of the things I admire so much about Quinn; he’s been relentless in his recovery and trying to get his body into the best shape it can be,” Milwee said. “I give him a lot of credit for handling his body like a pro.”
A healthy Ewers is definitely a welcome addition to the Longhorns as they prepare to face a Sun Devils team. Sun Devils quarterback Sam Leavitt is out to prove he’s a “better” signal caller.
The Longhorns and Sun Devils will kick off at noon CT on New Year’s Day inside Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta.
