From the moment the Texas Longhorns announced their move to the SEC, college football fans began counting down the days until they resumed their rivalry with the Texas A&M Aggies.
The rivalry between the Longhorns and Aggies, known as the Lone Star Showdown, is one of the fiercest in college football. They may not have played since 2011 due to conference realignment, but make no mistake, there’s no love lost between these in-state foes.
Saturday’s game has high stakes, not only because of the return of the rivalry, but because the winner will face the Georgia Bulldogs in the SEC Championship Game. Put all this together and this game looks like a classic game waiting to be born.
Clearly, college football fans agree. Saturday’s game is now the most expensive college football game in history, with an average purchase price of $1,072, according to TickPick. This makes this game the most expensive regular season game between college football and the NFL.
To date, the most expensive college football game on record was last year’s Ohio State Buckeyes vs. Michigan Wolverines game in Ann Arbor, with an average purchase price of $763. The price for this game is already 40 percent higher and could rise even higher as kickoff approaches.
The “admission” price for this game is already $742, 160 percent higher than this week’s Michigan-Ohio State game in Columbus ($285).
The rivalry between the Longhorns and Aggies dates back to 1894, when the former boasted a 76-37-5 record. In their last meeting back in 2011, Texas won 27-25 on the road.
If you’re lucky enough to be a part of this game, cherish it. Even if these teams were to meet again on an annual basis, there would be no other matchup like this one.
