Henry Cisneros – former HUD Secretary and Mayor of San Antonio
“President Jimmy Carter was a remarkable man who always remained deeply loyal to the causes he believed in. I first met him as HUD Secretary and later through our mutual collaboration with Habitat for Humanity. There I served as vice chair of Habitat for Humanity, a global human initiative.
“Although Habitat never requested funding from the federal government, after his term President Carter became Habitat’s primary leader and devoted much of his life to the organization. He believed Habitat would be a more desirable place. We helped identify ways federal funds could be used to purchase land so Habitat homes could be built in the United States.
“I have learned that he is tireless in his advocacy work and will not rest until something is completed. When he was Secretary, he asked for an issue related to habitat, and I advised him that it was quite difficult. His answer was: “Mr. Secretary, you can do it. A few years later, I was working with him one-on-one in the Habitat building in the backyard of his house. He noticed that I was having trouble keeping track of my footsteps and said, “Director, it’s obviously been years since you’ve done this. So let me show you how I do it.”
“President Carter was a true leader. I was honored to know him and see firsthand the tremendous impact he had on my life and countless others.”
