MEXIA, Texas — The Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) Texas Rangers have identified a man who died after reportedly barricading himself inside a Mexia home on September 12th.
The Texas Rangers said they are investigating the death of 57-year-old Alan Best of Mexia.
On Sept. 12, residents along South Lena Street and East Evergreen Street told 6 News that as the U.S. Marshals Service was attempting to execute a federal warrant, a man barricaded himself inside a home, prompting heavy police, including SWAT teams, to show up. The Limestone County Sheriff’s Office confirmed that its deputies, Texas State Police and the McLennan County Sheriff’s Office were on scene assisting the Sheriff’s Department.
The Mexia Police Department said it had been contacted to send out marked patrols to increase local law enforcement presence during the incident. Mexia Fire and EMS were also reportedly on the scene.
6News reporter Sydney Dishon said she heard multiple gunshots and flash bangs being fired over the course of the afternoon.
A spokesperson for the U.S. Marshals Service told 6 News that SWAT teams confronted the suspect, now identified as Best, on the porch of the home, but the suspect returned to the home and barricaded himself there.
Authorities tried to negotiate with Best for hours, the U.S. Marshals’ Office said.
Authorities were eventually able to enter the home, where they found Best dead from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound, the Sheriff’s Department said.
Mexia police said negotiations “concluded” around 6 p.m.
