The Texas women’s swimming and diving team made headlines today when it announced the addition of Mexican diver Alejandra Estudillo, a world championship medalist and Olympic finalist just a few weeks ago at Paris.
The addition of Estudillo is significant as Texas continues its ambition to beat the University of Virginia and win the NCAA title. Estudillo will undoubtedly enter as one of the top divers in the NCAA. She finished sixth in the 3-meter springboard event in Paris earlier this month, just 16.80 points behind the bronze medalist. Additionally, Estudillo won a bronze medal in the synchronized 10-meter diving event at the World Championships in Doha in February of this year. She also placed fourth at the 2023 Diving World Cup Super Final last September.
Texas finished second at the NCAAs last season by 86.5 points. Diving has been a big factor in Texas’ recent top three finishes at the NCAAs, and adding Estudillo to the roster should help make up for last season’s attrition of graduates. She will team with Hailey Hernandez, who will be her senior at Texas and was the top diver at the NCAAs last year with 33 points. Next year’s junior, Sarah Carruthers, also joins the ranks of Texas’ top diving talent after competing at the NCAAs last year and finishing 19th in the high dive.
Estudillo’s last-minute addition to the 2024 freshman class bolsters the Longhorns’ relatively small but very strong class. She joins fellow diving team members Jayden Lynch, Taylor Fox and Morgan Robson. On the swimming team, they’re joined by world championship finalists Piper Enzi, Kate Hurst, Lily Nesty and Campbell Chase, all four of the top swimmers in the 2024 class. Jillian Cox also rejoins the team after taking a break as a freshman last year to focus on training for the Olympic Trials. And Abby Arends is a transfer from North Carolina State University.
