The Texas State Bobcats defeated the Sul Ross State Lobos 99-65 behind senior forward Morgan Hill’s 20 points and 10 rebounds.
The Maroon and Gold got a much-needed home win and currently have a 2-2 record.
“There are definitely positives to take from this game. A big part was that everyone had a chance to really see quality minutes,” Texas State head coach Zenarae Antoine said. “I thought our forwards did a really good job in this game.”
Despite the big win, Antoine said the Bobcats have a lot of work to do.
“On the flip side, I’m really disappointed with the turnovers in this game,” Antoine said.
Antoine talked about the team’s improved shooting performance after struggling through the first three games.
“My shot selection definitely improved (in this game),” Antoine said. “That’s something we’ve always talked about. I always tell them a bad shot equals a turnover.”
Texas State shot 55.9 percent from all over the field and 40 percent from the three-point arc. The team made 17 of 23 free throw attempts.
Senior forward Jaylin Foster had 16 points, nine rebounds and two assists against the Lobos.
Texas State jumped out to a 14-4 lead within the first five minutes of the first quarter and led 23-10 at the end of the quarter.
The Maroon and Gold quickly extended their lead to 20 after three quick scores in the first two minutes of the second quarter. Sul Ross State could barely cut the deficit to 13 points before the Bobcats seized momentum and took a 49-21 lead at halftime.
Sul Ross State had its highest score in the third quarter, but so did Texas State. The Bobcats held a commanding 28-point lead at 51-79 after three-quarters of the game.
After scoring 20 points in the fourth quarter, the Bobcats fell one point short of the 100-point mark, finishing the game with a 99-65 victory.
Texas State hosts Stephen F. Austin at Strahan Arena on Nov. 22 at 7 p.m. Stephen F. Austin enters this game with a 3-0 record, with wins over Texas Southern, Abilene Christian and Louisiana Tech.
