BROWNWOOD, Texas — For many Central Texas firefighters, Brownwood will be home at least one day a week for the next few months.
Several firefighters from Brownwood, Mason, and Stephenville, along with emergency medical technicians (EMTs) from Texas Lifeguard Emergency Services, completed the Texas State University of Technology’s Emergency Medical Services – Advanced Paramedic AEMT, which began this fall. Participating in a certificate program. Classes will be held every Thursday this semester.
“This program fits my schedule perfectly,” said Hayden Ince, a firefighter with the Stephenville Fire Department. “Completing the program will improve myself and our fire department.” “Having the classes offered at Brownwood is a big deal because it’s much closer than other classes we considered.”
Keegan Craddock, also with the Stephenville Fire Department, said completing the class will help him achieve a personal goal.
“I want to be a paramedic,” he said. “This is the next step for me to achieve that.”
Craddock said he is looking forward to what the class has to offer.
“I think we’ll be working on more advanced content later this semester,” he said.
The program also includes TSTC’s Immersive Interactive Lab. This is a virtual training area with realistic settings enhanced with sounds and smells, such as a garage with a burning car, grandma’s living room, a city park, a lake, and a volcano. To name a few examples, the news release states:
“It’s great to have all the environments in one room,” Craddock says. “It’s going to be an intense workout in a real-world environment.”
Like Craddock, Caleb Burke is hoping to advance his career. He has been with the Stephenville Fire Department for 10 months and is impressed with TSTC.
“The facilities are great,” he said. “We plan to cover a lot of ground in the coming months.”
Cameron Horton, a firefighter with the Brownwood Fire Department, is no stranger to TSTC’s Brownwood campus. He is a 2021 graduate of the Paramedic Program.
“It’s a big deal to be able to have these programs in Brownwood,” he said.
Horton said he couldn’t wait to see his first scenario in the room, since he didn’t have access to the Immersive Interactive Lab when he was a student at the Brownwood campus.
Asheville and many of its surrounding mountain towns are built in valleys, making them especially vulnerable to devastating rains and flooding.

The lawsuit alleges that Santa Fe paramedics “stated that Mr. Tapia was clearly deceased and would not be transported.”
“It’s very important to get as close to the real-life environment as possible,” he said. “It also relieves stress when actually making phone calls.”
In addition to being a class instructor, Miranda Hicks is also an alumnus of TSTC’s Emergency Medical Services program.
“It’s obviously different, but I love it,” she said of sitting in front of the class instead of sitting at student desks. “I have been waiting for a class like this to showcase our Brownwood campus, and I am excited about the future of the EMS program at Brownwood.”
TSTC plans to offer a basic paramedic class next spring at the Brownwood campus, Hicks said.
“We have a lot to offer first responders in a central location,” she said.
According to wontonline.orgThe need for emergency medical technicians in Texas is expected to increase by 19% between 2020 and 2030.
TSTC offers the Associate of Applied Science degree in Emergency Medical Services, as well as the Emergency Medical Services – EMT, Emergency Medical Services – Advanced Paramedic AEMT, and Emergency Medical Services – Paramedic certificates in the Emergency Medical Services program. I’m doing it. This program is available at our Abilene, Brownwood, and Harlingen campuses.
