ATLANTA — The College Football Playoff continues on New Year’s Day as the unlikely conference champion continues his Cinderella run in the quarterfinals as the Arizona State Sun Devils take on the Texas Longhorns in the Peach Bowl. I’m trying.

The Sun Devils entered the 2024 season with one of the worst chances of winning a Big 12 Championship, let alone qualifying for the CFP. Still, the team stayed the course and bounced back from early losses to Texas Tech and Cincinnati. Arizona State has won each of its past six games, defeating Iowa State in the conference championship and sneaking into the first round of the playoffs.
ASU has never participated in the four-team CFP format and has never come close to a national championship since it last won the title in 1975.
Texas defeated ACC champion Clemson in the opening round of the playoffs and is poised to return to the semifinals for the second straight year. Led by Quinn Ewers, the Longhorns advanced to the SEC Championship in their first year in the conference, but lost to Georgia for the second time this season. Texas hasn’t played in the national championship since 2009.
The Longhorns won their only matchup against the Sun Devils, which came in the 2007 Holiday Bowl.
My pick: Longhorns win, 35-28.
