A Texas woman has been charged with murder after police say she shot and killed her husband, set his truck on fire and fled the scene in a kayak.
Authorities in Bexar County, Texas, discovered Thomas Calavera Jr.’s body in a closet during a welfare check, KENS, KSAT, and Crossroads Today reported, citing an arrest affidavit.
On the same day, various media reported that Calhoun County deputies responded to a report of a vehicle fire. Witnesses told police that a woman, later identified by authorities as Faith Page Goins, was seen walking away from the burning truck, police said.
News outlets reported that officers found Goins kayaking near the burning truck. Crossroads Today, citing the affidavit, reported that Goin suffered severe burns and was in possession of Calavera’s identification card.
Police reportedly determined that the burning vehicle belonged to the victim.
Goins allegedly confessed to police that he shot Calavera before burning the truck, according to an affidavit reported by three news outlets.
Goin is Calavera’s common-law wife, KSAT reported, citing a representative.

Goins is charged with serious bodily injury/murder and arson in her husband’s death. It was not immediately clear whether she had hired an attorney or filed a plea.
The initial welfare check that led to the discovery of Calavera’s body was ordered by Calhoun County officials, KSAT reported. Calavera’s father visited his son’s home to try and locate him, but was unsuccessful.
Calavera’s body was discovered when Bexar County deputies searched his home.
