DORCHESTER, Texas (KXII) – A group of involved parents met in Dorchester on Thursday to discuss the hot button topic of Texas education—school voucher.
“What is the problem you are trying to solve here, and how does the school choice solve that,” asked the room, speaker and education researcher Lynn Davenport.
“Not,” she finished.
Parents’ meetings have been discussing the exact same issue with representatives from the state hundreds of miles away, as House Bill 3 shines a spotlight on the state’s capital.
The bill creates a voucher system for Texas education, but not everyone thinks it is something the state needs.
“Are we still going to have the freedom to homeschool our kids the same way we have from the start,” said pastor and relationship parent Zach Pauling. “That’s our concern about the homeschool aspect, and there are completely different concerns between private and public schools.”
Parents are concerned that vouchers will take away their freedom instead of adding them, creating imbalances in the system.
“Yes, that’s going to hurt our public schools,” Davenport said.
Homeschooling mother Nikki Truthdell said this may be a problem today, but it will have long-term consequences.
“I have grandchildren who go to homeschool, but I don’t know what it will look like to them,” she said.
She encourages people who feel the same way to do one thing.
“I’ll contact your representative multiple times, text them, email them, tweet them and make calls,” she said. “I’ll do it all and let them know that you won’t step back.”
