R-Willow Park US Rep. Roger Williams introduced this week a bill that would allow the US government to reimburse Texas’ lonely operation, Gov. Greg Abbott’s Year of Long-standing Border Patrol Initiative.
Abbott recently asked the federal government to pay Texas for border spending, and he met with President Trump last week.
“This is something the state is always trying to do,” said James Barragan, a political reporter for the Texas Tribune. “They are always trying to get money back from the federal government and they’ve been trying to do this in the past. They send checks and bills to the federal government, as you know, and then they give it to them. I tried to make him pay him back.”
Williams has implemented similar measures without success, but this time there appears to be more support. His 2024 bill had only two co-sponsors in the House. There are seven of these.
“It looks like things are getting a little more serious. Rep. Williams isn’t the only one pushing this bill,” Barragan said. “And it’s unclear to me whether it has enough support from the whole of Congress. But it’s going to be the state essentially sending bills, and the money will come from the Treasury. It’s unclear if it will pass, but it seems there’s a bit more traction this year.”
